The Panama
Line
1936-1981
In 1936, the United States
Government in the form of the Panama Canal Company embarked on a project to
upgrade the lifeline of support for the U.S. Panama Canal Zone.
Since the
building of the Panama Canal in 1904-1913, the Unites States had employed
the steamships of the Panama Railroad and Steamship Line to support the
construction effort and the ongoing supply and movement of personnel between the
U.S. and Panama. The steamers of this line dated from the early 1900's and
were in great need of being replaced.
Rather than building bland but functional
ships, the Panama Canal Company with the blessing the United States Government
planed and build a trio of state of the art sister ships that served
the Canal Zone for almost 50 years.
These ships, the Ancon, Panama and
Cristobal not only had a long and valuable peacetime life, but also contributed
greatly to the efforts of the Allies in World War II.
The link below will launch a self
running presentation that will give you a brief yet interesting biography of the
lives of these progressive and modern passenger/cargo liners.
The
pictures contained within the presentation are all part of my collection of
Panama Line memorabilia.

Line.
